Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and all members of the delegation returning from Azerbaijan died in a helicopter crash, Mehr agency reports.

In addition to the president and the head of the Foreign Ministry, the imam of Tabriz Mohammad Ali al-Hashem, the governor of the East Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati, the helicopter crew and one security guard were on board the helicopter.

Information about the death of Raisi and the entire delegation was confirmed by Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri.

Earlier, Press TV, citing the Iranian Red Crescent, reported that no survivors were found at the crash site, and the helicopter itself was completely burned out.

The government of the Islamic Republic will hold an emergency meeting in connection with the death of the president and foreign minister.

According to Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, in the event of the death of the President, his powers pass to the First Vice President. This position is held by Mohammad Mokhber.

The incident with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter occurred on Sunday afternoon. It was initially reported that the helicopter made a hard landing in the Verzegan region in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan.

Tasnim agency clarified that there were three helicopters in the president’s motorcade.

The army, police and members of the Iranian Red Crescent Society were sent to the scene, but the rescue operation was seriously complicated by adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain.
