Sports 05/02/2009 Indonesia defeats Uzbekistan in Fed Cup

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Indonesian women’s team chalked up a stunning 2-1 win over the favored Uzbekistan on the opening day of the Fed Cup tennis competition in Perth, Australia.

At the State Tennis Center, Indonesia, which is ranked 36th while the Uzbeks are ranked 17th, had Ayu Fani Damayanti to thank for her pivotal role in the victory.

Ayu, world No. 568, came back from a set down to beat world No. 470 Vlada Ekshibarova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. After Sandy, world No. 295, failed to follow Ayu’s success when she lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to world No. 80 Akgul Amanmuradova, Ayu and Sandy teamed up to secure the victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Akgul and Albina Khabibulina.

Indonesia team manager Paquita Widjaja praised her players, saying that they had given their best.

"I was more than nervous, watching those girls playing tough matches. Ayu and Sandy came up against powerful players and played in rubber sets. This really is a sweet victory," Paquita said as quoted by the Indonesian Tennis Federation website, www.pelti.or.id.

Indonesia’s State Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs Adhyaksa Dault watched the matches.

"It was a hard game against the Uzbeks. However, they have made me confident that they will advance in this tournament with their solid teamwork," Paquita said.

The Asia/Oceania Group I competition features eight teams, split into two groups. Indonesia is in Group B with India, New Zealand and Uzbekistan. Group A consists of host Australia, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan.
