Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 November, the first polling station for the U.S. presidential election opened in the small community of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. In this locality, both candidates — Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris — received an equal number of votes (three each), reports "Parliamentary Newspaper."
The U.S. presidential election follows an indirect two-stage system. The first stage, known as the national election, takes place on the first Tuesday of November, allowing all registered voters to cast their ballots.
The second stage will occur on 17 December, when the Electoral College, consisting of 538 representatives from all states and the District of Columbia, will cast their votes. Each state has a designated number of electors that corresponds to its number of representatives in Congress. Most states employ a "winner-takes-all" principle, where the candidate who receives the majority of votes secures all of that state's electoral votes.
To win, a candidate must obtain at least 270 electoral votes. The results of the Electoral College vote will be certified by Congress on 6 January 2025. The inauguration of the elected president will take place on 20 January.
Candidates who disagree with the results can request a recount and challenge the results in court. This year, the Democratic Party has prepared a strategy in case Donald Trump attempts to declare victory before the counting is complete.
