Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On the eve of the start of CMS COP14, UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Andersen and Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Dr. Musonda Mumba arrived in Uzbekistan for the first time.
At the Samarkand airport, the distinguished guests were met by the First Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change Obidjon Kudratov.
It is worth noting that Uzbekistan joined the UN Environment Program in 1992 and is a member of 9 multilateral environmental agreements and organizations managed by UNEP.
In turn, our country became a member of the Ramsar Convention on 8 February 2002. Today, the total number of internationally significant wetlands in Uzbekistan has reached four sites with a total area of 674,400 hectares.
