Global smartphone sales hit 700m in 2012
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Sales of smartphones in the world grew by 43% year-on-year in 2012 and reached 700 million unions, research company Strategy Analytics said in its report.

Strategy Analytics said that global smartphone sales made up 217 million handsets in the fourth quarter of 2012, which rose by 38.2% year-on-year.

According to Strategy Analytics, South Korea’s Samsung sold 213 million smartphones in 2012 (97.4 million units in 2011), including 63 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012 (36.5 million in 4Q 2011). In the result, its global market share made up 30.4% in 2012 against 19.9% in 2011 and 29% in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to 23.2% in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Apple (USA) shipped 135.8 million smartphones in 2012 (93 million handsets in 2011), including 47.8 million handsets in the fourth quarter of 2012 (37 million units in 4Q 2011). Its share fell from 23.6% in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 22% in the same period of 2012 and grew from 19% in 2011 to 19.4% in 2012.

Sales of Nokia (Finland) decreased from 77.3 million units in 2011 to 35 million in 2012 and from 19.6 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 6.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Share of Nokia in the market made up 5% in 2012 compared to 15.8% in 2011. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Nokia’s market share was just 3% (12.5% in 4Q 2011).

Other vendors shipped 316.3 million smartphones in 2012 against 222.8 million handsets in 2011. Their sales also grew from 63.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 99.6 million in the same period of 2012. Share of these vendors made up 45.2% in 2012 against 45.5% in 2011. In the fourth quarter of 201, their share reached 45.9% (40.6% in 4Q 2011).
