Gas blowout with hydrogen sulfide recurs at Mustaqillik-25 well

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 May 2025 at 06:10, a gas blowout with a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide under high pressure occurred at Well No. 202 of the Mustaqillik-25 field, leading to the resumption of gas fountain flow. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

To prevent the spread of hazardous gas, a controlled flare of the gas stream was carried out. All operations are being conducted in full compliance with safety protocols.

The incident area has been cordoned off and is under 24-hour monitoring by specialists from Uzbekistan’s militarized unit for blowout and gas safety, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the State Inspection "Sanoatkontikhnazorat."

According to the Ministry of Energy, there is no threat to the population in the surrounding areas.

Previously, on 27 March 2025, a similar hydrogen sulfide gas release occurred at the same well, which was also followed by a controlled ignition. On 22 April, the gas fountain ceased after the wellbore collapsed and the casing was ejected, leaving only a weak gas inflow (griphon).

Foreign specialists have also been brought in to assist in eliminating the emergency. Further information will be provided as necessary.
