French MPs pay visit to Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Members of National Assembly of France Lionel Luca and Jean Glavany visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan on 15 June 2011.

The Uzbek Foreign Ministry said that the sides discussed water-energy issues in Central Asia on the request of the French side.

It was noted that this problem in the region should be considered based on international law. The UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes from 17 March 1992 and the UN Convention on international Watercourses from 21 May 1997 say clearly that all decision on use of trans-boundary rivers, including construction of hydro power stations, should not damage environment and does not infringe rights of neighboring states

Uzbekistan actively cooperates with such authoritative international organizations, searching solutions for water problems in global scale such as the World Water Council and International Commission of Large Dams.

Within the preparation to upcoming the Sixth World Water Forum in March 2012 in Marseilles, Uzbekistan initiated and held a regional water regional conference on 12-13 May 2013.

Its participants called all the Central Asian sides to join the UN Conventions and use their principles and norms in solving regional water problems.

In early June, Uzbekistan joined the International Commission of Large Dams and hopes that cooperation with the structure will help to constructive solution of problems, related to construction hydro power stations at the trans-boundary rivers in Central Asia.

During the meeting, it was noted that Uzbekistan does not ignore rights of the upper course countries for development of hydro power. It was said that it would be rationally and securely to construct small hydro power stations with total capacities. This is confirmed by other international organizations and experts.

Position of Uzbekistan fully meets norms of international law and rules in this area and is based on them, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

Ambassador of France to Uzbekistan Francois Gauthier also participated at the meeting.
