The Portuguese state news agency Lusa reported that one of the great figures in world football had passed away at 03:30 local time. He died due to heart problems.

Last several years, Eusebio had problems with his health. In 2013, he was several times hospitalized with heart problems. He would turn 72 on 25 January.

Funereal of the legend of Portugal and Benfica Eusebio will take place in Lisbon on 7 January, RTVE reported.

Portugal announced a three-day national mourning in connection with the death of Eusebio.

Major part of his career Mozambique-born Eusebio played for Benfica. He helped Benfica to 11 Primeira Liga titles between 1961 and 1975, scored 638 goals in 614 matches, and won the Ballon d’Or in 1965. Overall, he played in 715 matches for Benfica and scored 727 goals.

With Portugal, Eusebio claimed the third place at World Cup in 1966 with Portugal. He became best goal scorer of the tournament with 9 goals.

He left Benfica in 1975 and played for seven clubs within four years. He retired from football in 1979.
