Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Five people died as a result of a Nexia 2 car falling into the South Mirzachul Canal in the city of Shirin, Syrdarya region, the press service of the Internal Affairs Directorate of Syrdarya region said.

According to the department, the incident occurred on 17 June.

As the police department clarified, the driver of the Nexia 2 lost control while crossing the bridge.

The car crashed through the fence on the left side in the direction of travel and fell into the water.

There were a driver and four passengers in the car.

Rescuers pulled a car from the water with the bodies of the driver and three passengers.

A criminal case has been initiated into the incident under Article 266, Part 3, paragraph “a” (Violation of traffic safety rules or operation of vehicles, resulting in human casualties) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

An investigation is underway. The search for the fifth victim continues.
