Iraq’s presence in the South Africa 2010 qualification tournament, which continues on Sunday against Australia in Brisbane, had been thrown into doubt when FIFA suspended the Iraqi Football Association (IFA) on Monday due to "serious governmental interference".
The IFA was suspended after an Iraqi government decree on May 20 dissolved the governing bodies of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee and national sports federations and replaced by interim committee presided over by the Minister of Sport.
However, FIFA were informed by General Secretariat for the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Iraq on Wednesday that the IFA had been "excluded" from the aforementioned decree and were able to continue their activities.
Based on this information, FIFA lifted their suspension of the IFA but only on the condition that there is not a repeat of the interference from the Iraqi government.
A FIFA statement said that officials from the AFC, the IFA and the Iraqi government will be invited to Zurich "as soon as possible to clarify all outstanding issues."
