FIFA Council unanimously approves World Cup expansion to 48 teams
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The FIFA Council approved plans to expand the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026 onwards.

The plans were approved at the session of FIFA Council in Zurich on Tuesday, receiving unanimous backing.

Delegates were asked to vote on four proposals to change the existing format or stick with the current format of 32 teams.

The new format will include a first round of 16 groups of three teams, FIFA said, with further details to be given later.

The decision will not affect the World Cups, which will be held in 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

According to reports, UEFA members will receive 16 sports for World Cup (13+1 in 2018 FIFA World Cup), Africa – 9.5 (5), Asia – 8.5 (4.5), South America 6.5 (4.5), Northern and Central America – 6.5 (3.5) and Oceania – 1 (0.5).
