Experts studied school attendance rates

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Experts from the Institute of Macroeconomic and Regional Research (IMRI) analyzed attendance in schools in Uzbekistan.

The results of the analysis revealed:

In 2022, the average school attendance rate was 83.8%, which dropped to 82.5% by 2023.

An analysis of attendance showed that, by region, the lowest rates were observed in Tashkent (57.8%), Jizzakh (76.9%), Tashkent (75.8%) and Ferghana (79.8%) regions. The highest rates were observed in Bukhara (89.1%), Surkhandarya (88.3%) and Kashkadarya (88.2%) regions.

In terms of subjects, the lowest attendance rates among primary school students were observed in Uzbek language and mathematics lessons. Among middle school students – the Uzbek language, computer science, literature and English, and among high school students, the Uzbek language, computer science, algebra and English.

According to the results of a survey conducted among parents, it was found that the main reasons for missing school classes are: illness - 75.4%, helping parents with work - 8.9%, caring for children under 6 years old - 3.1%, studying with tutors - 1.7%, do not have the means to attend school - 1.1% and 8.5% - parents do not know the reason.

According to PISA, in Uzbekistan, 18.5% of students missed classes for three months in a row; this figure is higher among boys than among girls.
