Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan and the Uzbek-Japanese Center will present an exhibition of traditional Japanese shawls Furoshiki, which will be held at the Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture during from 8 to 20 August 2023

The opening ceremony will take place on 8 August at 17:00 at the Ikuo Hirayama International Cultural Caravanserai. At the event, the Ambassador of Japan to Uzbekistan, Mr. HATORI Takashi, will make a welcoming speech, and after the opening, the chef of the official residence of the Ambassador, Mr. Akiyama, will demonstrate the process of preparing the Japanese dish Onigiri (portioned koloboks of rice with stuffing inside).

Furoshiki is a woven square scarf. Since ancient times, such scarves in Japan have been used to wear or store important and simple things, for example, Onigiri. You can conveniently tie an object of almost any shape into it for carrying.

Today, there is a wide range of Furoshiki colors, from traditional patterns and natural elements to a modern youth style that expresses a world of unique Japanese beauty. Among the patterns are those that express the wishes of happiness, health, long life and successful marriage, as well as the image of the four seasons.

The study of the origin of each individual pattern reveals the depth of culture that the Japanese people have inherited. They are usually made of cotton, silk or polyester in a wide variety of sizes so that they can be used as a scarf, and some even as a tablecloth.
