Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Following the results of the first day of the summit in Brussels, the heads of state and government of the European Union could not agree on the formation of a seven-year budget plan for 2021-2027 and a fund for the recovery of the community economy after the pandemic, Euronews reports.
In this regard, the planned press conference of the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen following the results of the first day of the summit was canceled.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said even before the summit: "I expect that the negotiations will be very, very difficult." French President Emmanuel Macron echoed her. According to him, a compromise must be reached at the summit so that the recovery plan and the long-term budget of the EU would allow ensuring a European economic, social and environmental restart in the coming years.
According to one of the participants, the negotiations on the first day of the summit were blocked by the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, who has "his own vision of managing the recovery fund."
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said he is counting on a new budget proposal and anti-crisis plan that will meet the expectations of the so-called "Lean Four" of Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden.
The recovery plan was proposed in the amount of 750 billion euros, including 500 billion in subsidies and 250 billion in loans. In addition to this plan, the proposed EU budget for 2021-2027 in the amount of 1.074 trillion euros.
The disagreements of the summit participants concern, among other things, the size of the budget and the ratio of subsidies and loans.
