Ensuring food security: achieved results

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Experts from the Institute of Macroeconomic and Regional Research (IMRI) analyzed the results of Uzbekistan in 2015-2022 according to the UN sustainable development goals.

Uzbekistan is successfully fulfilling its goals to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and these achievements are recognized by the international community. In the Inter-country ranking of the Sustainable Development Goals published by the UN (SDG) in 2023, Uzbekistan took 69th place among 166 countries, increasing its ranking by 8 steps (77th place in 2022).

According to the SDG Index report, Uzbekistan recorded a positive increase in sustainable development indicators for 11 goals out of 16 goals. One of them is the goal of food security and nutrition (Goal No. 2).

Significant work has been done in Uzbekistan to ensure food security and proper nutrition. In particular, some of the results achieved under Goal No. 2, consisting of 8 targets and 14 indicators - “Ending hunger, ensuring food security and improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agricultural development” can serve as a clear example.

Uzbekistan took first place in the Top 10 countries with the greatest progress in ensuring food security in 2019-2022. according to the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) rating.

A lot of work has been done in the field of land relations: 400 thousand farmers were given 100 thousand hectares of sown areas, which made it possible to additionally grow 1.5 million tons of food products.

The state monopoly on cotton and wheat was completely abolished. If in 2017 there were 2 agricultural clusters in Uzbekistan, then in 2022 their number reached 633.

Currently, 134 cotton-textile, 200 wheat, 249 fruit and vegetable, 42 rice, and 8 medicinal clusters are effectively functioning in the country.

In 2017-2022, grain yield increased from 43 to 50 c/ha, raw cotton from 23 to 34 c/ha, grapes from 124 to 132 c/ha, potatoes from 330 to 349 c/ha, melons and watermelons from 345 up to 359 c/ha.

Over the past 6 years, US$8.6 billion has been invested in the agricultural sector. In agriculture, labor productivity increased by 23%, and exports of agricultural products increased 1.9 times - from US$811 million in 2017 to US$1.6 billion in 2022.
