Earthquake in Afghanistan Claims at Least 250 Lives
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A powerful earthquake struck the eastern province of Kunar in Afghanistan, claiming the lives of at least 250 people. More than 500 residents were injured, according to the state news agency Bakhtar.
Local authorities noted that the reported casualty figures are preliminary, as rescue teams continue to reach remote areas with limited communication. Efforts are underway to assess the scale of destruction and provide assistance to those affected.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake, measuring magnitude 6.0, occurred on August 31 at 11:47 local time. The epicenter was located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad (Nangarhar Province) at a depth of 8 kilometers.
Tremors were felt in Kabul and several other regions of the country. Some areas also experienced internet outages.
