Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The drivers of two BYD Song Plus electric vehicles who hit an 8-year-old girl at an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing in Navoi region have been detained and taken into custody.

Previously, it was reported that on 1 July in Khatyrchi district of Navoi region, two Song Plus model cars fatally struck an 8-year-old girl at an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing. Both cars approached the crossing at high speed and did not slow down despite the presence of pedestrians, including children, on the road.

One of the cars passed through the crossing, causing the girl to fall onto the roadway. The second car ran over her. As a result of the injuries sustained, the girl died at the scene.

The press service of the Road Safety Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan reported on Monday that drivers N. A. (vehicle registration number 85M100GA) and F. A. (85Y600MA) were racing.

The car driven by N. A. hit the girl as it passed the crossing, causing her to fall onto the road. The following car then ran over her. The girl died at the scene of the incident.

A criminal case has been initiated against both drivers under part 2 of article 266 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation, resulting in a person’s death), which carries a penalty of up to 7 years in prison with certain rights revoked.

On 4 July, charges were brought against the drivers, and on 5 July, both drivers were detained and taken into custody.

It was also revealed that in the past year, N. A. had exceeded the speed limit 12 times and once ignored road markings, while F. A. had committed one offense related to allowing a person without a proper license to drive.
