Originally launched by the US Department of Defence in January 1985, dot-com was originally intended as an internet designation for “commercial entities”.
Technology company Symbolics registered the first dot-com domain name, symbolics.com, on 15 March 1985. The domain was purchased by XF.com in 2009, and remains the oldest registered dot-com domain on the Internet.
Number of companies, using .com domains, reached 100. About 18,000 domains were registered in .com zone in 1995. Currently, about 80,000 domains in .com zone are registered a day and their total number exceeded 115 million.
