Digital yuan accepted in taxis in Chinese city Xi’an

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Taxis in the Chinese city of Xi’an and Bank of Xi’an have launched a pilot project to pay for travel using the digital yuan, local newspaper SXdaily reports. In 10 taxis, which were selected to participate in the pilot project, QR codes were installed to pay for travel in national digital currency.

As follows from the 30 August report, in Xi’an, digital yuan can already be used to pay bills for electricity, purchase of medicines, fuel for refueling a car and other goods and services.

In July, the People’s Bank of China published the first digital yuan project white paper in English, which describes the technical characteristics of the digital currency. The document says that foreign tourists will be able to use the digital yuan without opening accounts with Chinese banks during the Winter Olympics, which will be held in Beijing in 2022.

The white paper also states that the digital yuan will receive support for smart contracts, which will allow payments to be made according to predetermined conditions or agreements agreed between the two parties. The timing of the start of the use of the digital yuan is still unknown.
