Developing renewable energy discussed in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan in partnership with the OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan organized a workshop titled “Issues of developing renewable energy in Uzbekistan” on 10 October 2011, the press service of the movement said.

Representatives of international organizations, accredited in Uzbekistan, NGOs, Ecologic Movement, MPs of the Legislative Chamber, mass media participated at the event.

The movement’s statement said that global consumption of energy increased due to economic growth of countries in the beginning of 21st century, which resulted in large volume of emissions to atmosphere. Scientists said that global warming is result of large emissions of thermal power stations and vehicles. Currently, total volume of annual burnt organic fuel in the world is equal to 12 billion tonnes of oil or 2 tonnes of oil equivalent per person.

In last 40 years, the volume of produced organic fuel in the world exceeded the volume of produced fuel in all history of humanity, which resulted in sharp decrease of its reserves.

In structure of preliminary fuel-energy resources of Uzbekistan, some 97% fell to share of oil and gas, 2.3% - coal and 0.7% hydro-power engineering. Despite large potential of renewable energy, its share does not reach 1%.

According to some calculations, opportunity of renewable energy in Uzbekistan can be equal to 51 billion tonnes of oil. Current technologies will allow Uzbekistan to produce energy equal to 179 million tonnes, which exceeds the volume of produced energy in Uzbekistan three times and allows to cut emission of 447 million tonnes of carbonic acid gases, various sulphureous compounds, nitric oxide, etc.

For last several years, sharp growth of prices for hydrocarbons in many countries, people started to think about alternative renewable energy sources. In particular, European countries increased installation of photoelectric stations increased and Middle east countries increased solar energy production twice.

Total area of solar collectors reached 15 million square meters in the United States, 12 million square meters in Japan. Some 1 million solar energy facilities were installed in Israel, which provides 75% of hot water in the country. Use of wind energy is increasing in Europe as well. Annual growth makes up 40-45%. Despite large investments, these facilities fully repay expenses.

It was said that development of renewable energy in Uzbekistan will ensure energy independence for long period, improve energy supply, in particular in remote and rural areas, decrease emission of gasses and development of Uzbekistan.

Participants of the workshop said that works carried out in Uzbekistan for development of renewable energy sources are not enough and offered to develop National strategy on developing renewable energy sources.

They also proposed to develop special state programme on use of renewable energy sources and train specialists in this direction. It was said that Uzbekistan should create legal base for use of renewable energy.

At the end the workshop, participants adopted recommendations on further developing of the sector in Uzbekistan.
