Sports 15/10/2008 Denis Istomin reaches quarterfinals of Tashkent Challenger

Czech Republic’s unseeded Pavel Snobel shocked seventh seeded Flavio Cipolla of Italy to enter the quarterfinals of the US$125,000 Tashkent Challenger, an ATP Challenger series event being played at the Olympic Tennis School in Tashkent.

In the second round match played today the left handed 184th ranked Snobel upset the seventh seeded 124th ranked Cipolla 6-3, 6-0 in an one sided encounter.

Third seeded Denis Gremelmeyr, fourth seeded Michael Berrer both of Germany and home favorite sixth seeded Denis Istomin also moved into the last eight stage of the competition.

Gremelmayr showed great form in disposing off Frenchman Edouard Roger Vaselin 6-4,6-3 , while Berrer went through a close second set before overcoming Polish player Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Cheered by his home crowds Istomin came back from being a break down in the second set to score an impressive 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win against German Daniel Brands and stop a German hat trick of wins today.

The 28 year old Snobel a regular at events in Uzbekistan said “I had advantage over Cipolla even before the match as I had defeated him in the final round qualifying of Wimbledon this Year.

I know his game well and being a left hander helped me to handle the match well”. “I’m playing the best tennis of the season”, he added.
