Uzbekistan 11/05/2007 Delegation of Greek archaeologists visits Uzbekistan

A delegation of the Greek Ministry of Culture took trips to Tashkent, Samarkand and Termez as well as archaeological dig of the site of ancient settlement – Kampyrtepa on the south of Uzbekistan on 26-29 April. The group led negotiations on bilateral cooperation in scientific research.

 

The delegation was headed by the Director of the Directorate of Pre-Historic and Classic Period Archaeology of the Ministry of Culture Elena Korka. It also included the head of the 13 Inspection of the same Directorate and Ministry Argiro Dulgeri Incesiloglu and a teacher of antique history of the Department of Languages, Literature and Civilisations of the Black Sea Countries at the Democritus University of Thrace Dr. Elias Petropoulos.

 

During their stay in Tashkent, the members of the delegation met the administration of the Arts Academy of Uzbekistan at the International Caravanserai of Culture, and the management and staff of the Scientific-Research Institute of Arts, saw the Archaeological Museum, and visited the Ministry of Culture and Sport of Uzbekistan.

 

The guests also took a trip to Samarkand, where they saw the archaeological monuments and collections kept in museums, medieval archaeological monuments of the city and other sights.

 

In Termez, the group met local administration, and then visited world-famous Kampyrtepa (end of 4th-early 3rd century B.C. – 1st-2nd century A.D.) – a tower of Burdaguy-Pardagvi-Pandoki used to protect the bridge over Amudarya (Oxus), and used by the Alexander the Great and his army to cross the river. Alexander established a settlement here entitled Alexandria on the Oxus or Alexandria Oxianskaya.

 

The delegation also met the Academician Edward Rtveladze, the leader of the Toharistan expedition, which has been carrying out explorative works on this settlement for many years.
