Construction of the Center of Islamic Civilization with a 65-Meter Dome Nears Completion in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Center of Islamic Civilization, whose construction, initiated by a presidential decree on June 23, 2017, has now entered its final stage. The cornerstone of the complex was laid during the celebration of Eid al Fitr in 2018.

The majestic complex is designed in the style of ancient architectural monuments. Four grand portals, each 34 meters high, flank the central dome, which reaches 65 meters. Traditional domes, ornate portals, and a sophisticated blend of decorative patterns give the structure a distinctive appearance.

The main hall of the Center is dedicated to the Quran and will house a spiritual relic of the Muslim world — the ancient Uthmanic Mushaf — as well as manuscript copies of the Quran from the Samanid, Karakhanid, Khwarazmshah, Timurid, and other eras, translations into Old Uzbek, and unique manuscripts from global collections. The President reviewed the hall’s design and provided recommendations for its final arrangement.

The complex also includes a 460-seat conference hall equipped with modern technology for international meetings and forums.

The Center’s exhibitions cover the periods of “Pre-Islamic Civilization,” the “First and Second Renaissance,” “Uzbekistan in the 20th Century,” and “New Uzbekistan – New Renaissance.” They showcase artifacts, manuscripts, images, and multimedia materials, highlighting the contributions of renowned scholars and thinkers such as Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Farabi, Al-Biruni, Ibn Sina, Mirzo Ulugbek, Alisher Navoi, Imam Bukhari, Imam Tirmidhi, and many others. Special attention is given to women who left their mark on the history of science and education, including Bibikhanum, Khonzodabegim, Gavkharshodbegim, Nodirabegim, and others.

The Center aims to serve as a place for in-depth study of ancestral heritage and to transform this legacy into a living force capable of addressing contemporary challenges. Plans include close collaboration with the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan and global scientific and educational centers named after Imam Bukhari, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Maturidi, and other institutions.

The President praised the progress of construction and emphasized the importance of organizing the Center’s activities effectively, enriching its content. He noted that each visitor will be able to appreciate the rich history, knowledge, and thinking of their ancestors while receiving a profound spiritual experience.

In addition, the head of state reviewed adjacent commercial and service facilities, which are expected to enhance the development of the area’s tourism infrastructure.
