Chinese Goldwind to supply wind turbines for 500 MW wind farm in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind said on Friday that it had received an order from Masdar, a UAE-based energy company, to supply wind turbines for the 500-megawatt Zarafshan wind farm in Uzbekistan.

Goldwind will supply 111 of its GW155-4.5 MW turbines for this "largest wind project in Central Asia". Construction will begin in the third quarter of 2022 and should be completed by the end of 2024.

According to Sun Lianhua, Goldwind’s general manager for the Central Asian region, Zarafshan is an important project to promote Chinese wind energy in overseas markets.

China produces about half of all wind turbines in the world, but in the past they were mainly used in the domestic market. Today, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly trying to supply products to other countries and oust traditional leaders such as Vestas, Siemens Gamesa and General Electric.

At the end of 2021, Goldwind ranked second in terms of wind turbine shipments in the world.

According to the "Concept for providing the Republic of Uzbekistan with electric energy for 2020-2030", Uzbekistan is going to build 5 GW of wind power plants (and 7 GW of solar) by 2030.

In August this year, it was reported that the Saudi energy company ACWA Power will build the "world’s largest" wind farm with a capacity of 1.5 GW in Uzbekistan.

Energy companies of the Middle East - ACWA Power and Masdar - are extremely active in the post-Soviet space - in the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus. In particular, Masdar has almost monopolized the solar energy market in Uzbekistan, having received the rights to develop almost 1 GW of solar photovoltaic projects in this country.
