China Sees Surge in Interregional Travel on First Day of Dragon Boat Festival Holiday
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — China recorded a significant increase in interregional travel on the first day of the nationwide public holiday marking the traditional Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival.
According to official data released by China’s Ministry of Transport and reported by Xinhua News Agency on Sunday, the total number of trips reached 230.97 million, marking a 10.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
Road transport once again bore the brunt of the travel volume, with 209.99 million passengers — an 11.3% year-on-year increase.
Rail services accounted for 18.12 million passenger trips, reflecting a 5% rise over the previous year. Waterway transport saw a sharp increase, with 959,000 passengers, up 21.3% year-on-year.
Air travel remained steady compared to 2023, with 1.911 million air passengers recorded.
The Dragon Boat Festival is observed annually on the fifth day of the fifth month in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. In 2025, the holiday fell on 31 May, with national public holidays scheduled from 31 May to 2 June.
