China and Russia agree to extend bilateral cooperation treaty

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in Beijing, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Following the meeting, the two sides agreed to extend the Treaty on Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia and to further deepen strategic coordination.

Negotiations and key agreements

During the talks, Xi Jinping noted that the current year carries symbolic significance, marking 30 years since the establishment of the strategic partnership between China and Russia and 25 years since the signing of the basic treaty on good-neighbourliness and cooperation.

He stated that bilateral relations are developing on the basis of strengthened political mutual trust, expanded comprehensive cooperation, and coordination on international issues.

The sides confirmed that relations between the two countries are built on the principles of equality, mutual respect, good faith, and mutual benefit. Cooperation is expanding in trade, investment, energy, science and technology, and humanitarian exchanges.

Xi Jinping emphasized the need to further develop practical cooperation, including in new technological areas, as well as the creation of additional sources of economic growth. He also highlighted the importance of humanitarian exchanges in education, culture, tourism, and sports.

International context and coordination

The sides reaffirmed their intention to strengthen cooperation within international organizations, including the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), BRICS, and APEC. They stressed the need for joint efforts to strengthen the international order and develop a more balanced system of global governance.

Outcome of the talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia–China relations have reached a high level of political trust and practical cooperation. He noted the growth in trade turnover, development of energy and technological cooperation, and expansion of humanitarian exchanges.

Following the meeting, the sides signed a joint statement on further deepening strategic coordination. In addition, 20 documents were signed covering the fields of economy, trade, education, and science. A separate statement was also adopted on promoting a multipolar world and a new model of international relations.
