Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Today, the second joint meeting of the Majlisi Milli and the Majlisi Namoyandagon Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan of the sixth convocation has set the date for the election of the head of state, Dunyo news agency reports.
“To appoint the Election of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan for Sunday, October 11, 2020,” the National News Agency of Tajikistan “Khovar” quotes the decision of the chambers of the Parliament.
According to the current legislation, the date of the presidential elections in Tajikistan is set at a joint session of both chambers of the republic’s parliament. The term of office of the incumbent President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, expires in November 2020.
Under the Constitution, the President is elected by universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot for a term of 7 years. A candidate for the post of president of the republic can be a person who is at least 30 years old, has exclusively Tajik citizenship, higher education, speaks the state language and has lived in the republic for at least the last 10 years.
One and the same person cannot serve as president for more than two consecutive terms. This restriction does not apply to the Founder of Peace and National Unity - the Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon.
