Chairperson of the Senate put forward several initiatives at the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is being held at the UN headquarters in New York. A delegation of Uzbekistan led by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Chairperson of the Republican Commission on Increasing the Role of Women in Society, Gender Equality and Family Tanzila Narbaeva also takes part in its work.

It should be noted that the Commission is a working body of the UN Economic and Social Council and is developing international standards for the protection and promotion of women’s rights, as well as proposals for their implementation.

This year’s session will focus on accelerating gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by addressing poverty, strengthening institutions and financing, and implementing the principles of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The conference is attended by representatives of parliaments and authorities, ministries and organizations, non-governmental structures and civil society institutions from around the world that are responsible for this area.

According to UN Women, today 10.3% of women worldwide live in extreme poverty. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, progress in eradicating poverty must be 26 times faster.

That’s why at the conference, governments and civil society organizations, experts and activists from around the world are focusing on developing actions and attracting investment that will help end women’s poverty and improve gender equality.

In preparation for this prestigious event, UN Women took into account the numerous positive results of Uzbekistan over the past 5 years in terms of achieving gender equality, women’s empowerment and, together with the Republican Commission on the promotion of the role of women in society, gender equality and family Consultative sessions of the countries of Central Asia and Azerbaijan were held in Tashkent.

As a result of the event, a common position was developed on supporting women and girls and their social protection.

At the 68th session, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis spoke on behalf of the region of Central Asia and Azerbaijan and noted that today our countries are actively developing trade and economic cooperation, implementing joint investment projects, creating favorable conditions for interaction in the field of ensuring gender equality, and outlined common approaches to cooperate and put forward a number of initiatives.

In particular, in order to reduce poverty and create decent working conditions, it was proposed to take effective measures to protect women and girls at the global level within the framework of the UN initiative “Global Accelerator for Job Creation and Social Protection”, to introduce a gender approach into curricula and teaching methods, and also in STEM education, especially in rural areas.

It was also noted that it is necessary to streamline the regulatory framework to eliminate differences in the field of digitalization in the regions, which will help implement digital literacy and IT skills programs for vulnerable groups of the population, especially rural women within the framework of UNDP projects.
