Central Election Commission: 57.3% voters attend elections
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan said 57.3% of the eligible voters had already cast their votes at elections as of 1 pm Sunday, UzA reported.

Briefing journalists in Tashkent, CEC chairman Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said over 8,400 voting stations opened at 6 am across the country for the elections of the deputies of the Legislative Chamber and the local people’s deputies’ councils.

44 voting stations are functioning at Uzbekistan’s representations abroad. The first foreign voting stations opened in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia, India and Pakistan.

The Environmental Movement of Uzbekistan, which has been given 15 seats in the lower chamber of the parliament, is holding its conference today to elect the deputies.

The Central Election Commission chairman announced the first results of the voting. According to him, more than 9,879,195 people have already cast their votes, which is 57.3% of the total 17,215,700 registered voters.

Because the law on elections to Oliy Majlis requires at least 33% voters turnout, the elections to the Legislative Chamber are considered as having taken place, Abdusalomov said.

More than 270 observers from 36 states and four international organizations (OSCE ODIHR, CIS Executive Committee, Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Organization of the Islamic Conference) are participating in the elections.

The CEC registered more than 630 representatives of the local and foreign media to cover the elections. More than 30,000 observers from political parties are also monitoring the process.

No information on the violation of the legislation during the elections has been received, CEC head said.
