Assisting in complex cases and training local doctors

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  Specialists from the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health (RSNPMCMCH) performed 10 complex surgeries in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, providing valuable help to women and training local medical professionals. The surgeries were conducted in the cities of Nukus, Kungrad, and Beruni.

The Maternal and Child Health Center, as the leading institution for obstetrics and gynecology in the country, offers practical and organizational-methodological support to its 14 regional branches and district medical institutions. To this end, several working trips to Uzbekistan’s regions have taken place this year, with the latest visit from November 19 to 21 to the Center’s branch in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, as well as to the Kungrad and Beruni interdistrict perinatal centers.

Most of the gynecological surgeries performed had not been previously practiced in district-level medical facilities. Their implementation allows patients to receive high-tech medical care locally without the need to travel to regional centers or the capital. Improving the quality of regional healthcare and providing modern medical assistance at all levels is one of the country’s leadership’s main priorities today.

Four out of the 10 surgeries were performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive approach.

In addition to the surgeries, specialists from the Republican Center for Maternal and Child Health conducted masterclasses in all three cities, focusing on modern skills for gynecological interventions.

Training sessions were also organized for 100 doctors at the Kungrad and Beruni interdistrict perinatal centers on antenatal care, management of high-risk pregnant women, and for 75 doctors on family planning. Medical professionals were introduced to the updated 2024 National Clinical Protocols in these areas.

The training participants included obstetricians-gynecologists and family doctors from primary healthcare institutions in these two districts of Karakalpakstan.

New diagnostic methods in obstetrics sparked great interest among local healthcare professionals. In particular, screening technologies for early detection of pregnant women at high risk of developing arterial hypertension and gestational diabetes during pregnancy have been introduced at the central multidisciplinary clinics in Kungrad and Beruni.

By acquiring knowledge and skills for the early identification of such patients, doctors are better equipped to prevent obstetric complications and help women become happy mothers.

Turning to the surgeries performed, it is important to note their complexity. As stated by Zulfiya Baltabaeva, head of the Kungrad interdistrict perinatal center, four patients with extraordinary complications were operated on here. One of them had a giant uterine fibroid, over 40 centimeters in size, which was successfully removed. Another woman also had a fibroid, but it was abnormally located. Thanks to the qualifications of specialists from the Republican Maternal and Child Health Center, the woman was able to retain the possibility of having children, as she had dreamed.

High-tech surgeries were performed alongside local specialists, which will be the most effective way to enhance their professional skills.

It is worth noting that working visits by specialists from the Republican Center for Maternal and Child Health are being organized step by step across all regions of Uzbekistan both this year and in the coming 2025. In November, in addition to Karakalpakstan, such visits took place in the Surkhandarya and Bukhara regions. This work is being carried out in accordance with Presidential Decree No. PP-296 of 8 September 2023, "On Measures to Protect Maternal and Child Health and Strengthen the Reproductive Health of the Population."
