António Guterres secures second term as UN Secretary-General

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- António Guterres was on Friday re-appointed to a second term as UN Secretary-General, pledging as his priority, to continue helping the world chart a course out of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Guterres then took the oath of office to Bozkir on the rostrum in the General Assembly Hall. He will hold this post until 2026 inclusive. This was announced by the chairman of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkyr.

António Guterres was the only candidate for the post of General Secretary. The first time he took it on 1 January 2017. The organization’s general secretary is elected for a five-year term.

Guterres is the ninth UN Secretary General. Trygve Lee (Norway) became the first general secretary of the world organization. After him, this post was held by Dag Hammerskjold (Sweden), U Thant (Myanmar), Kurt Waldheim (Austria), Javier Perez de Cuellar (Peru), Boutros Boutros-Ghali (Egypt), Kofi Annan (Ghana), Ban Ki-moon (South Korea).
