Antimonopoly Committee, VEON discuss project of liberalization of access to the international Internet network

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Antimonopoly Committee of Uzbekistan hosted a meeting with a delegation headed by the executive director of the VEON group of companies and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Unitel LLC Kaan Terzioglu.

Among the guests are also Boris Tadic, Advisor to the VEON Group of Companies, Viktor Biryukov - Executive Vice President for Legal Support, Government Relations and Group Compliance by VEON and Andrzej Malinowski, Chief Executive Officer of Unitel LLC.

The focus of the meeting is discussion of the project of liberalization of access to the international Internet network in the Republic of Uzbekistan, prepared by Unitel LLC.

The implementation of the project document, as promised by the company representatives, will additionally attract foreign investment in the ICT sector (over USD 6 million), create new jobs and reduce the cost of the Internet for the population.

In addition to this project, the meeting also discussed a wide range of issues and problems of the industry that need to be addressed today. The Chairman of the Antimonopoly Committee - Shakhrukh Sharakhmetov, in particular, stressed the need to revise the working methods and improve the service of content providers. Since, today, the company’s subscribers are faced with the problem of automatic switching (without the consent of the subscribers) to the services of content providers (paid services) when dialing random numbers.

The head of the Antimonopoly Committee informed that a new approach has been introduced to determine the dominant position in the mobile communications services market. In this connection, since 20 May 2021r, Unitel LLC has been included in the State Register of Business Entities occupying a dominant position in the commodity or financial market for mobile data transmission services, whereas earlier it was included for mobile communication services in general. In the opinion of the delegates, the meeting was productive and not the last.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue to discuss the existing problems, as well as to strengthen cooperation in the development of ICT and mobile payment systems and on other issues.
