Alisaphic: domestic disruption taking its toll
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Al Ittihad boss Kemal Alisaphic admitted the suspension of the Syrian League has disrupted his side’s preparations for their crucial AFC Cup Group B game with Shurtan at Aleppo International Stadium but believes a win can catapult his side into the last 16.

The Syrian Football Federation took the decision to indefinitely postpone the country’s domestic programme earlier this month, meaning a lack of competitive action for the hosts.

With both sides locked together on four points, Al Ittihad can take the upper hand in the pursuit of leaders Al Qadsia with victory, although defender Omar Hemedi is ruled out.

Despite problems in the build-up, Alisaphic is hopeful Al Ittihad can take full advantage of their opportunity on Tuesday.

“The interruption of not being able to play games recently is causing a problem for the team and the last phase of training was a problem for us,” he admitted.

“We are waiting for a tough match and the players need to repeat their successful results of previous competitions. If we can win the game, it will be a big step towards qualifying for the next round.

“The match will be difficult but we have an opportunity to move forward. Shurtan is a good team that has achieved good results but I am sure we can win.”

Al Ittihad managed a useful 1-1 draw in Uzbekistan two weeks ago and Alisaphic revealed he took plenty away about their opponents from the contest.

“Shurtan’s weaknesses are in defence and the goalkeeper but they are strong in midfield and attack so we expect to play defensively and rely on counter-attacks.

Shurtan coach Shurtan Edgar Gess has been under pressure at home due to indifferent results and was frustrated to see his side gift Al Ittihad a goal in the previous encounter.

Gess is therefore counting on a reaction from his men in Aleppo.

“It will be a good match and we are here to offer good football and to win. We analysed the previous game and we have noted the strengths and weaknesses and trained worked well,” he said.

“Al Ittihad is a good team that plays with strong and disciplined tactics.

“My players are inexperienced in international competition and I hope that they get used to this atmosphere. They have an incentive to play at a good level and win against Al Ittihad.”
