Agriculture output in Uzbekistan grows by 4.5% in 2008
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Agriculture output of Uzbekistan reached 10.479 trillion soums in 2008 or grew by 4.5% year-on-year, including 5.605 trillion soums (up 2.8%) of output of plant-growing and 4.874 trillion soums (6.7%) of output of animal husbandry.

Share of the non-state sector in the total volume of agricultural output was 99.9%, the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan said.

Share of dekhkan farms in agricultural production is 65.3% in 2008 (62.7% in 2007), private farms - 32.5% (34.7%) and agriculture enterprises - 2.2% (2.6%).

Share of output of plant-growing in the total volume of agricultural output was 53.5% (55.1% in 2007), the committee said.

Total area allocated under crops in farms of all types was 3.609 million hectares, or 48,300 hectares more than in 2007.

Uzbekistan allocated 1.559 million hectares under grains (up 1.4% year-on-year), of which 1.272 million hectares under wheat. Cotton fields decreased by 1.8% to 1.425 million hectares.

The country increased potato fields by 7.1%, vegetable fields by 1.4%, melon fields by 11% and fields under forage crops were decreased by 4.2%.

In 2008, farms of all types produced 6.73 million tonnes of grains, including 6.335 million tonnes of spiked cereals, of which, in its turn, 6.146 million tonnes were wheat.

State purchases of spiked cereals made up 2.531 million tonnes, including 2.401 million tonnes of wheat. The government also purchased 3.4 million tonnes of raw cotton (down 7.7% in 2007).

The country produced 1.398 million tonnes of potato (up 17.7% year-on-year), 5.217 million tonnes of vegetables (up 11.7%), 981,200 tonnes of melons and gourds (16.8%), 1.402 million tonnes of fruit and berries (10.5%) and 791,000 tonnes of grapes (down 10.1%).

Share of animal husbandry in the total volume of agricultural output was 46.5% (44.9% in 2007), the committee said.

As of 1 January 2009, the population of cattle in farms of all types was 8.024 million and increased by 566,700 or by 7.6%. The population of cows increased by 202,400 (6.5%), sheep and goats by 936,800 (7.4%), pigs by 1,400 (1.5%), poultry by 3.398 million (13%).

The population of cattle (including caws), sheep and goats, poultry has increased in all regions of Uzbekistan.

About 92.8% of cattle and 94.3% of cows were bred in dekhkan farms, 6% cattle and 4.9% in private farms. Dekhkan farms bred 77% of total sheep and goats, 74.6% of pigs, 65.8% of poultry.

In 2008, farms of all types produced 1.287 million tonnes of meat in living weight (up 6.6% year-on-year), 5.426 million tonnes of milk (up 6.5%), 2.429 billion eggs (up 9.7%), 23,800 tonnes of wool (up 6.2%), 896,800 pieces of karakuls (up 14.9%) and 23,500 tonnes of cocoons (up 9.2%).

Share of dekhkan farms in total production of meat was 95%, milk - 96.8%, eggs - 61.8%, wool - 83%, and karakuls - 60.7%.
