Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 May, in correctional institution No. 6 in the Pap district of Namangan region, a 24-year-old prisoner was found hanged in a production workshop. This was announced by the head of the human rights society “Ezgulik” Abdurakhmon Tashanov.

The mother of the deceased reported that signs of torture were visible on her son’s body. On May 11, the prisoner called his mother and complained about bullying.

Abdurakhmon Tashanov called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ombudsman to conduct an inspection and give a legal assessment of the situation.

The prisoner was serving a sentence under Part 5 of Article 273 of the Criminal Code for the illegal sale of narcotic drugs, their analogues or psychotropic substances in large quantities.

On 29 May, the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Uzbekistan reported that an examination of the body did not reveal any bodily injuries, except for marks on the neck.

The district prosecutor’s office is conducting a pre-investigation investigation into the incident.

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that a comprehensive, complete and objective investigation will be conducted. Based on the results of the investigation, a legal decision will be made.

The office of Ombudsman Feruza Eshmatova said that her regional representative went to the prison to study the situation.

The results of the inspection will be presented to the public.
