According to the latest data, the death toll from a powerful earthquake that occurred in Turkey’s Kahramanmarash and caused destruction in the surrounding provinces of the country has reached 20,665 people. This is evidenced by the data of the Office for the Elimination of Consequences of Emergency Situations under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan (AFAD). 80,088 people were rescued, 92,697 affected local residents were evacuated to other provinces of the country.
On 6 February, powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 occurred in Pazarcik district of the city of Kahramanmarash and 7.6 in Elbistan region. On the same day, tremors with a magnitude of 6.4 were recorded in Nurdaghi region and 6.5 in Islahiye of Gaziantep province. The natural disaster affected the provinces of Kahramanmarash, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya and Elazig. The earthquake was also felt in the capital, Ankara.
