A meeting of the Commission of the CIS Member States on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy takes place in Bishkek

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 9 November 2022, the 23rd meeting of the Commission of the CIS Member States on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy was held in Bishkek (Kyrgyz Republic).

The event was attended by members of the Commission from the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, representatives of the Republic of Uzbekistan, experts from relevant departments and organizations of the CIS member states. The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Commission, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Belarus M. Mikhadyuk.

On behalf of the CIS Executive Committee, Anar Ahad oglu Djanakhmedov, Deputy Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation, participated in the event and delivered a welcoming speech, who noted effective cooperation in a number of key areas of the industry, including within the framework of the implementation of the List of joint response measures to emerging problems, approved by the Protocol decision of the Economic Council of the CIS from 10 June 2022.

In accordance with the agenda, the meeting participants considered a number of topical issues and documents aimed at further development of cooperation between the CIS member states in the field of nuclear energy.

The implementation of the Interstate Target Program “Reclamation of the territories of states affected by uranium mining industries” and the preparation of a draft Program for Scientific Research at the Kazakhstan Materials Science Tokamak for 2024–2026 were discussed.

In order to effectively implement the Program for the Development of National Nuclear Infrastructures of the CIS Member States, it was decided to approve the draft Regulation on giving Rusatom Service JSC the status of a core organization of the CIS Member States.

The drafts of the Concept of cooperation between the CIS member states in the field of waste management of I and II hazard classes and the Plan of priority measures for its implementation were considered and approved. It is planned to send these documents to the CIS Executive Committee for further consideration in the prescribed manner.

Members of the Commission discussed in detail the situation with radioactive waste management and approved the Methodology for assessing nuclear legacy objects at various stages of decommissioning.

Within the framework of the Commission, a meeting of the Council of representatives of the senior level of safety regulatory bodies in the use of atomic energy of the CIS member states was held. The key issues related to the draft Set of Measures for Improving Safety Culture and Leadership to Ensure the Security of the CIS Member States and the preparation of a draft Concept for Radioactive Waste Management were discussed.

Following the results of the meeting of the Commission, a protocol was signed.

The next meeting of the Commission of the CIS Member States on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes is planned to be held in the fourth quarter of 2023.
