A group of hackers working in the Russian Federation gained access to the computer systems of several US ministries - Reuters

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Reuters reported that a group of hackers working in the Russian Federation, as a result of a cyber attack, gained access to the computer systems of a number of US ministries: 1) the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); 2) the Department of Commerce; 3) the Department of the Treasury.

The DHS confirmed the fact of the break-in and said that they were reacting to the situation in cooperation with government and private structures. In addition, according to The Washington Post, the hackers gained access to State Department and Pentagon data.

Analyzing cyberattacks committed against US government agencies, experts highlight a number of points.

1. According to experts, the scale of the hacking is so serious that a meeting of the US National Security Council was held. Cybersecurity researchers say it was the largest cyber attack in history against Western governments. At the same time, sources fear that the hacks, which are known at the moment, may be only the tip of the iceberg.

2. According to experts, some signs indicate that the attack is behind the hacker group APT29, which works for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. The same group hacked into the systems of the State Department and the White House during the Obama presidency. Meanwhile, it takes several months before the United States will officially reveal the results of the investigation. If Washington concludes that Moscow is behind the burglary, this could have serious economic consequences.

3. At the same time, analysts believe that the current administration, which will have to leave, is now so actively developing the topic of imaginary cyberattacks by Russia in order to complicate Joe Biden’s coming to power. In addition, this is a reason to further accuse the future administration of Joe Biden of inability to confront key challenges.

In general, the attack in the information space served as a wake-up call for the federal government, including the Biden administration, as foreign actors will undoubtedly carry out such attacks and improve their tactics in the future.
