Kazakhstan and the World Bank joined forces in 2001 to build an eight-mile dam between two sections of the Aral Sea and improve management of water resources. The project cost $86 million and was 15 per cent funded by the Kazakh government, with the World Bank providing the other 85 per cent. Today, discussions are continuing between the two sides over expanding the revitalization project by building a second dam.
