Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A presentation of a new textbook "Principles of Gender Equality in Islam" was held at the International Islamic Academy.
This manual for teaching in religious educational institutions was developed to promote the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, in partnership with the International Islamic Academy and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Partnership with the religious community is essential for the implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, adopted in Cairo in 1994, and for the achievement of the National Sustainable Development Goals adopted by Uzbekistan in 2018.
In many countries of the world, representatives of the religious community provide information to the population on the reproductive health and rights of women and men, on the prevention of gender-based violence, thus empowering people to make informed choices regarding their health and life.
A group of experts from the International Islamic Academy with the assistance of UNFPA experts worked on the development of a training package of materials and methodology for teaching it on gender and gender equality, reproductive health, prevention of violence against women and girls.
The authors, based on the Qoran and hadiths, scrupulously approached the coverage of the history of women’s rights in the teachings of Islam, the description and substantiation of the civil, political, family, socio-economic, spiritual and cultural foundations of women’s rights, the legal and moral consequences of discrimination against women, described in fundamental Islamic primary sources. The manual also provides a comparative analysis of the principles of women’s rights in Islamic law with modern legal systems, rights and freedoms enshrined in the laws of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The opening remarks at the event were made by the Vice-Rector of the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan B. Mamadiev, Chairman of the Committee on Women and Gender Equality of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis M. Kadyrkhanova and the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund Mr. Yu Yu.
During his speech, Yu Yu noted that “Faith-based partnerships and UNFPA are critical to accelerating efforts to raise awareness about family planning, reduce maternal mortality and end violence against women.”
The value of this study guide is that it analyzes the theoretical issues of gender equality and women’s rights in Islam. This manual is a comprehensive study devoted to the study of the legal status of women in Islamic law, which substantiates the need to study women’s rights as an integral part of human rights.
This manual includes topics such as: the concept of gender equality; women’s rights in Islam; the role of religious leaders in solving gender problems in society; UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; what should be the focus of efforts to protect women and girls from violence; reproductive rights and health; the role of religious leaders in reproductive health and rights and family planning.
During the presentation, it was noted that the developed package of educational and methodological materials will be included in the curriculum for students - future religious leaders. The information presented in this manual can be used in scientific research, brochures and special textbooks for universities, in the preparation of textbooks; educational centers to explain the basics of Islamic education among the population, with the aim of preparing young people for marriage and family relations, as well as a wide range of religious leaders.
