Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - By 2030, the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the structure of electricity generation should increase in Uzbekistan from the current 10% to 25%, follows from the recently adopted Republic of the Strategy for the Development of RES and Hydrogen Energy. The Global Energy Association wrote about it.
In 2020, the total installed capacity of renewable energy plants in Uzbekistan was 2 gigawatts (GW), follows from the data of the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA). 100% of the capacity was accounted for by hydroelectric power plants, which were built during the time of the USSR, including the Charvak hydroelectric power station (666 MW), the Khojyent hydroelectric power station (165 GW) and the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric power station (150 MW).
Until recently, there were no stations on other sources of renewable energy in the republic, but this year the situation began to change: In September 2021, in Navoi region (central part of Uzbekistan), a photovoltaic station (PVP) with a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW), built by Masdar from the United Arab Emirates (UAE);
-Another 100 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic power plant is being built in Samarkand region in the east of Uzbekistan - the operator of the project is the French Total;
- Regulators are also making efforts: the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan signed an Open Agreement on the development of renewable and hydrogen energy with the Saudi ACWA Power and the American Air Products;
-In 2019, the President of Uzbekistan approved the Decree on the transition of the republic to a green economy (for the period until 2030): as part of its implementation, the Ministry of Energy began to develop a thirty-year roadmap for the creation of carbon-neutral energy, in which the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade is also involved Uzbekistan, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Government of Japan.
