Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have organized the first sub-national Dialogue in preparation for the UN Global Summit on Food Systems with participation of involved state organizations as well as representatives of international and non-governmental organizations in Nukus, Republic of Karakalpakstan.
The Dialogue participants had an opportunity to discuss the current status of the existing food systems, what changes are to be introduced, as well as the future stakeholders’ cooperation on joint events and develop mutually agreed measures and organize a cycle of continuous learning system and exchange of information that contribute to the creation of sustainable food systems. These dialogues provide a unique opportunity to determine the extent to which they are involved in developing the national food security systems, as well as the areas for which they will be accountable in the future.
“Ideas, solutions and joint action plans to be developed through our National Dialogues are key to the success of the upcoming Summit. Each of us has a role to play in food systems, and we all have a responsibility to ensure their proper functioning. We can achieve a world where there is no hunger, no poverty, and no one left behind only if we join our efforts to address this vital challenge. While we continue adjusting to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the upcoming Summit provides an opportunity to focus on the most vulnerable food systems that have been revealed through the crisis - and try to rebuild those systems in ways that meet everyone's needs”.- stated Sherzod Umarov, FAO deputy representative in Uzbekistan.
The expected outcome of the dialogues of UN member states in preparation for the Summit on Food Systems is, among others, the development of a national program for the ensuring the sustainable national food systems for the next decade in accordance with the 2030 SDG Agenda.
«As we know, Karakalpakstan, is an ecological disaster zone associated with the consequences of the drying up of the Aral Sea, climate change and aggravated ecological disasters. One of the most important achievements of the Summit will be to encourage us to understand the fact that we must all work together to change the way the world produces, consumes, and thinks about food. Today's meeting is very important from the point of view of obtaining effective, based on local realities, recommendations and proposals on 5 areas of action proposed for discussion by the Summit” – said Bakhadur Paluaniyazov, UNDP Uzbekistan, Environment&Climate Action Cluster Lead
