Ministry of Energy: how the growing energy supply in Uzbekistan is ensured

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- As the President of Uzbekistan noted in his Address to the Oliy Majlis, “as the economic activity and incomes of the population grows, the demand for energy resources also increases.” In this regard, the Ministry of Energy is implementing projects to increase capacity, including for a stable power supply.
1.74 billion kWh of electricity was sold to the population of Uzbekistan in December 2020 alone, while in December 2018 (before the creation of the Ministry of Energy) - 1.57 billion kWh. That is, the supply growth was 11%.
In the country as a whole, in 2020, electricity consumption amounted to 69.1 billion kWh, which is 6.1% more than in 2019 and 20.1% more than electricity consumed in 2016.
How was such an increase in electricity consumption ensured? First of all, 66.4 billion kWh were generated at the country's power plants in 2020. electricity, which is 5% more than in 2019 and 12.6% more than in 2016.
The production of additional electricity in the country has become possible due to the implementation of investment projects to expand generating capacities. All of them are based on modern energy efficient technologies.
In particular, due to the implementation of projects provided for by the Investment Program, adopted in 2016, more than 3.7 GW of capacity were commissioned through loans secured by the state.
They have been achieved through the construction and modernization of a number of power plants. Thus, 900 MW of new capacities were obtained at Talimarjan TPP, 560 MW - Takhiatash TPP, 450 MW - Navoi TPP, 370 MW - Tashkent TPP, 150 MW coal-fired power unit at Angren TPP. This means that 1 new power plant has been built, 4 new hydroelectric power plants and the expansion of existing thermal power plants has been carried out.
It should be noted that the new Turakurgan TPP, built in Namangan region, today produces half of the electricity consumed by the three regions of the Fergana Valley, i.e. plays an important role in ensuring the energy security of the eastern energy hub. Before the commissioning of the Turakurgan TPP, power supply to the Fergana Valley was carried out only using electricity from other regions of Uzbekistan and imported from the Kyrgyz Republic.
Only due to the implemented projects over the past 4 years provided by the Investment Program, the country has the opportunity to generate more than 21 billion kWh of electricity per year.
In addition, after the introduction of energy efficient technologies, the specific fuel consumption for the production of 1 kWh of electricity decreased by 8%.
As a result, in the production of electricity, the consumption of natural gas will be less by an average of 2 billion cubic meters, which will give an additional opportunity to send the saved volume to the population and sectors of the economy.
Only due to the ongoing reforms in the country, measures were taken in 2020 to build six new power plants based on public-private partnerships (PPPs) with foreign investors, the total cost of which is about US$2 billion, with a total capacity of 2,700 megawatts.
In particular, as a result of the implementation of stages of investment projects in 2020, 1,387 megawatts of capacity will be commissioned in the country in 2021, which is 9 new power plants.
And already in October and November 2021, Turkish companies will build three new thermal power plants with a total capacity of 940 in the Tashkent region and Bukhara regions.
In October, it is planned to commission two solar power plants with a capacity of 100 megawatts each. In Samarkand region, the project is being implemented by Total Eren (France), in Navoi region - by Masdar (UAE).
Projects in the field of hydropower are also being implemented. In June 2021, the construction of the Kamolot hydroelectric power station, which is part of the Chirchik-Bozsuy cascade of hydroelectric power plants, will be completed, as well as the commissioning of a cascade of Zarchob small hydroelectric power plants on the Tupolang River in the Surkhandarya region.
