Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva met with Assistant Secretary of State of the United States of America, head of the State Department’s Office for Global Women’s Issues, Ambassador-at-Large Kelley Eckels Currie.
Thanks to the open and pragmatic foreign policy of Uzbekistan, cooperation with foreign countries is strengthening today.
In recent years, relations between Uzbekistan and the United States have reached a qualitatively new level. Cooperation between states is consistently developing not only on a bilateral basis, but also within the framework of international and regional organizations.
During the conversation, comprehensive information was provided on the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan to protect the interests of women, increase their role in the socio-political and economic life of Uzbekistan. The American side received information on the activities of the Commission on Gender Equality, as well as proposals for bilateral cooperation in this direction.
The US Assistant Secretary of State expressed her gratitude to the Senate of the Oliy Majlis for promoting Uzbek-American relations in ensuring the protection of the rights and interests of women.
Kelley Eckels Currie highly appreciated the ongoing policy of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, noted the full support of the US government for the efforts of Uzbekistan in the field of ensuring gender equality, encouraging the wide involvement of women in the social and political life of the country, promoting training programs for women in Afghanistan in Uzbekistan.
As the representative of the State Department noted, special attention should be paid to the significant progress made by the government of Uzbekistan in the elimination of forced labor, the victims of which were not only men, but also women, who were mainly from vulnerable groups of the population.
In addition, according to Kelley Eckels Currie, the creation in our country of a separate Commission on Gender Equality and the adoption of the Law on Guarantees of Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men are a vivid evidence of the irreversibility of the changes begun and the firm determination of the country’s political leadership to continue the course towards strengthening the new appearance of Uzbekistan and further deepening of reforms.
She welcomed the creation of an informal platform for the Dialogue of Women Leaders of Central Asian Countries and noted with satisfaction the involvement of Afghanistan in this format.
A positive assessment was voiced of the republic’s efforts to implement educational programs in Uzbekistan for Afghan women: “We thank Uzbekistan for its leadership in supporting women in Afghanistan,” as well as the progress of interaction in the trilateral format of Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and the United States.
The American side emphasized that the US government welcomes the decisive progress in our country in this area. In her opinion, reforms are already becoming real drivers of the growth of women’s activity not only in Uzbekistan, but also in the Central Asia region as a whole.
She said that within the framework of the C5 + 1 platform, a project to support women’s entrepreneurship has been launched, which, first of all, will be implemented jointly with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. At the same time, DFC is launching a project to improve the legal framework of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
DFC spokeswoman Charles Wallace emphasized that their current approach to financing is based on the principles of "smart economy", which implies empowering women as entrepreneurs in business operations owned by women, led by women and supported by women. According to her, the right investment is investing in women entrepreneurs, who in 90% of cases reinvest in the country’s social sphere.
It was noted that the Investment Fund will have a social dimension, which is the most likely way to implement various programs in the field of health, education, gender equality.
The representative of DFC C. Wallace expressed readiness to establish cooperation between rehabilitation centers for women (shelters) in Uzbekistan with American shelters.
During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
