Annual meeting of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia Working Group takes place

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 27 October 2020, the annual meeting of the Working Group of the United Nations Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) on Gender and Sustainable Development Goals was held.
The meeting was attended by representatives of governments working towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in SPECA countries. Representatives of relevant funds of UN agencies, funds and programs, and civil society organizations also took part in the event.
The SPECA Working Group undertakes the task of raising awareness of the interdependence between gender and the economy by sharing best practices in mainstreaming relevant issues. In addition, this structure is engaged in strategic research and implementation of projects in this area, as well as the development of intersectoral links with other relevant areas of SPECA activities, such as compliance with international legal documents and others.
The delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the event was represented by the chairman of the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on women and gender equality Feruza Eshmatova.
The meeting participants were informed about the large-scale work carried out in Uzbekistan to ensure gender equality and comprehensive support for women.
The participants were impressed by the experience of our country in reducing poverty among women, in particular the practice of using "women’s notebooks", as well as providing targeted social assistance at the expense of the Anti-Crisis Fund.
Women’s education is another topic of particular interest to the participants. In this regard, they were given detailed information about the support provided in our country to women and girls wishing to study in higher educational institutions. The experience of introducing special quotas for girls from low-income strata of the population was approved by the meeting participants.
The Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women and Gender Equality of the Oliy Majlis gave detailed answers to the participants’ questions regarding the policy of gender equality in Uzbekistan.
