Efforts of the Central Asian countries against persons who returned from Syria and Iraq discussed

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Within the framework of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2020, the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, together with the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia, held an online event on the topic: “Efforts of Central Asian countries against persons who returned from Syria and Iraq: achievements, challenges and lessons learned”.
The event was attended by UN Deputy Secretary General Vladimir Voronkov, Special Representative of the Secretary General, Head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia Natalya German, Head of the Regional Office of the Office on Drugs and Crime Ashata Mittal and experts from Central Asian countries, as well as representatives of a number of international organizations.
It discussed the issues of strengthening cooperation and exchange of experience in the field of return to their homelands of citizens involved in the activities of religious extremist and terrorist organizations and their integration into society.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sherzod Asadov acted as one of the main speakers of the event, who shared the experience of our country in this area, in particular, informed the participants about the work done in the framework of special operations "Mehr" and "Mehr-2" to repatriate more than 200 of our compatriots from the Syrian-Iraqi war zone.
V.Voronkov, N.Gherman, A.Mittal and other participants of the event highly appreciated the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, voiced within the framework of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, to organize an international conference in Tashkent in 2021 dedicated to the results and prospects interaction within the framework of the regional Joint Plan for the implementation of the Organization's Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, adopted 10 years ago.
The experience of Uzbekistan in repatriating its citizens from hot spots was also positively assessed. In particular, the work done on the early reunification of the repatriates with their families and communities, their integration at the makhalla level, as well as adaptation to local conditions and involvement in society was noted.
