Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On the night of 17 September, employees of the Lebap department of the Ministry of National Security, the prosecutor’s office, police and border service conducted a joint raid on the section of the state border between the Farab etrap of Turkmenistan and Alat district of Uzbekistan.
According to the sources of the Chronicle of Turkmenistan, on the Amu-Bukhara canal, the military noticed people transporting cargo in a rubber rowboat. The channel width in the border area is about 80 meters. The border guards opened warning fire into the air. From the opposite bank, the unknown responded with shots, presumably from a pump-action rifle, towards the Turkmen side. A man in a boat in the middle of the canal jumped into the water and swam to the Uzbek shore.
Several shots were fired from both sides. Nobody was hurt as a result of the incident.
On the Turkmen side, two people were detained with 50 boxes of Russian-made cigarettes. A boat with about 20 boxes was carried to the Uzbek coast.
The detained citizens of Turkmenistan were taken to the velayat department of the Ministry of National Security in Turkmenabat. During the preliminary investigation, it turned out that the detainees were engaged in cigarette smuggling and this was not the first time such an operation had been carried out. A total of 150 boxes of cigarettes were to be shipped to Turkmenistan.
The case will be referred to the prosecutor’s office. Investigators find out where the cigarettes were delivered and through which retail outlets they were sold. At the moment, the detainees have been charged under two articles - smuggling and armed resistance.
