Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 September 2020, a practical seminar "The role of judges in ensuring gender equality" was held. The event was organized by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, the Supreme Court in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
It was attended by members of the Commission on Ensuring Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Supreme Court, the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality and representatives of the media. Both foreign experts and representatives of international organizations joined the discussion via video conferencing.
It was noted that in our country the issue of ensuring gender equality and full support of women is in the spotlight. Regulatory and legal acts adopted in this direction, including the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On additional measures to further improve the activities of courts and increase the efficiency of justice" are primarily aimed at ensuring women’s rights and expanding their opportunities in all areas. \
In order to ensure its implementation within the framework of the joint project “Cooperation on the path to ensuring the rule of law in Uzbekistan”, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan is taking a number of measures to ensure gender equality in the judicial system and strengthen the role of the judicial system, as well as to achieve the fifth direction of the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, the specialists of the joint project “Cooperation on the path to ensuring the rule of law in Uzbekistan” are preparing analytical guides aimed at further increasing the role of women in the judicial system.
The Commission for Ensuring Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality are also actively involved in this process. Thus, these structures, in cooperation with the Supreme Judicial Council and the Supreme Court, have developed a program to introduce mechanisms for ensuring gender equality among judges. The program provides for a meeting with family members of women judges, identifying factors that hinder their work, taking measures to eliminate them, preventing cases of harassment at the workplace of women working in the judicial system, and taking preventive measures to increase the culture of interaction with women. During the event, issues of timely and complete implementation of this program and other similar work plans were discussed.
The international experience of increasing the efficiency of justice for women and the prospects for its application in Uzbekistan are also considered.
During the workshop, the results of analytical studies in the development and implementation of gender indicators for assessing the effectiveness of courts in ensuring and protecting women’s rights, as well as gender-legal expertise in the legislation of Uzbekistan were presented.
