Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 11 September 2020, the 8th meeting of the Board of Directors of the World Council of Craftsmen of the Asia-Pacific Region (WCC-APR) was held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan in the format of video conferencing.
The event was attended by Gada Hijavi-Kaddumi, Chairman of the World Crafts Council of the Asia-Pacific Region, and members of the Board of Directors representing 49 countries of the Asia-Pacific region (India, China, Kuwait, Malaysia, Japan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, etc.). The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan Adham Ikramov was invited as an honored guest of the meeting.
The agenda included issues of membership, the expansion of the national structure of NGOs, as well as the approval by the Council of candidates for the positions of President and his deputies of the Council for the Asia-Pacific Region for 2021 -2024 and others.
The World Crafts Council was founded by Ms Eileen O. Webb, Ms Margaret M. Patch and Ms Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay at an international meeting at Columbia University, New York, United States of America on 12 June 1964, to support and assistance of artisans and today remains the only organization uniting artisans from all over the world. HRW is a non-governmental organization, which is a part of UNESCO with the status of Category “A”.
The World Crafts Council consists of the following five regions:
Africa
Asian-Pacific area
Europe
North America
South America
Today the structure includes about 323 organizations, where the "Hunarmand Association" is also a member.
Speaking at the Meeting, Chairperson of the World Council for Crafts in the Asia-Pacific Region (2013-2020) Gada Hijavi-Kaddumi noted the importance and high level of reforms to support handicrafts initiated by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and proposed the candidacy of the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan A. Ikramov for the presidency WCC-APR for the period 2021-2024, which was unanimously agreed by all members of the Council.
Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan A. Ikramov expressed deep gratitude to all members of the Council, especially Ms. Gada Hijavi-Kaddumi for approving Uzbekistan as a nominee for the presidency of WCC-APR for the period of 2021-2024.
During the event, the Uzbek side proposed holding the 38th session of the General Assembly of the WCC-APR in December this year in the format of the videoconference.
In the presentation from Uzbekistan, A. Ikramov provided detailed information on the reforms carried out in Uzbekistan by the Government to support handicrafts, in particular:
- over the past 3 years, more than 90 thousand jobs have been created, and by the end of 2020 their number will be increased to 130 thousand;
- US$50 million was allocated for the Crafts Development Program in 2019, and another US$50 million in additional funds in 2020.
The Uzbek side was also attended by the Chairman of the "Hunarmand" Association U. Abdullaev, the Deputy Chairman of the Association A. Murtazaev, as well as the Deputy Chairman of the CCI F. Usmanov.
It should be noted that today the number of members of the Hunarmand Association is 36 440 people, which is 6440 more (+ 14%) for the same period in 2019. The number of students is 53 420 people. And handicraft centers were established in every region of the country.
Also, the Uzbek side noted the successful holding of international festivals in Uzbekistan, such as "Silk and Spices" in Bukhara and "Atlas Festival" in Margilan, as well as the holding of the I International Festival of Craftsmen under the auspices of UNESCO in Kokand.
For your information: 570 international artisans, foreign scientists and specialists, known for their scientific work and practical activities in the field of crafts, took part in the Festival from more than 80 countries of the world. And also participants from all regions of Uzbekistan shared their works and master classes, more than 2200 local masters of folk art in total.
As a result of the event, by unanimous decision of the members of the Board of Directors, it was decided to hold the 38th session of the WCC-APR General Assembly in the VKS format. And also within the framework of the II International Festival of Craftsmen in Kokand in 2021, to hold the first WCC-APR event led by Uzbekistan.
