Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 28 July 2020, within the framework of the visit of a government delegation to Turkey in Ankara, a meeting was held between the Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov with the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Turkey Ruhsar Pekcan.
During the meeting, a constructive exchange of views took place on the current dynamics of trade relations, as well as on the prospects for further increasing the volume of mutual trade through the implementation of specific measures in this direction.
During the discussion, the strategic nature of the trade and economic partnership between Uzbekistan and Turkey was emphasized, the scale of which has shown steady growth in recent years: the volume of trade in 2019 made up US$2.5 billion, showing an increase of 22.7% compared to the previous year. The parties reaffirmed their mutual desire to increase the volume of mutual trade to US$5 billion in the short term despite the impact of the pandemic. In this context, the priority was noted of accelerating the process of agreeing on the draft agreement on preferential trade, on which experts and specialists from the relevant departments of the two countries are currently working.
A number of other topical issues affecting bilateral relations in the trade and economic sphere were also discussed, including the measures being taken to intensify cooperation between the quarantine services of the two countries as part of the joint development of an agreement on cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Government of the Republic of Turkey in the field of plant quarantine, the signing of which will reduce the costs of Uzbek and Turkish entrepreneurs when supplying products to the markets of the two countries.
Special attention was paid to strengthening cooperation in the field of transport and logistics: in this context, it was noted that in January of this year in Tashkent, the railway administrations of Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Uzbekistan signed a protocol on the introduction of tariff discounts in the amount of 50% up to 70% for cargo transportation. During the meeting, the Turkish side was offered to consider the issue of possible joining of the Turkish railway administration to this protocol.
Also, the Turkish side was grateful for the support of Uzbekistan during the 4th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization.
The progress of the implementation of the "Action Plan for Economic Cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Turkey", signed during a high-level visit to Turkey in February this year, was separately considered. The parties agreed to coordinate efforts and introduce a new monitoring mechanism to ensure the unconditional execution of all points of this document.
Following the meeting, further joint actions were outlined within the framework of the designated areas of cooperation and an agreement was reached on closer coordination of interaction at the level of foreign economic departments of the two countries.
